Lateral Thinking - Preconceptions
What was the item they needed?

Fri Dec 07, 2007 6:12 pm  by tartle

Two strangers from different parts of America both build simular apartment buildings in their home towns. By chance, they both forget an important part of thier project. They each, once again by chance, call the same national hardware store and order the missing items. The prices they are quoted are as follows:

one will cost them $2.
two will cost them $2.
twelve will cost them $4.
and a hundred and fourty-four will cost $6.

What was the item they needed?

I liked this one. :D

The items they need are numbers for their doors.

each digit costs $2

1 will cost $2....... There is 1 digit in 1 and therefore costs $1
12 will cost $4....... there is 2 digits is 12 therefore it is $4
ect

Very nice!
Although I wish one could "hide" the answers so that viewers (like me) could figure them out on their own.

what about a hundred forty four? i think they need nails. the salesman does not sell them in singles. for one and two he sells them for the same price $2, 12 for $4 and the whole pack $6. the salesman uses a business strategy requiring them to purchase more as it seems cheaper

Each digit costs $2, "1" is one digit so it will cost $2 :?

I think the bill of materials would appear such as below;

ITEM No. ITEM DESRIPTION No PCS UNIT UNIT PRICE TOTAL PRICE
One Item ABC 1 Pcs $2 $2
Two Item DEF 1 Pcs $2 $2
Three Item GHI 1 Pcs $2 $2
Twelve Item JKL 2 Pcs $2 $4

144 Item MNO 3 Pcs $2 $6

maybe each number is $2.

1 and 2 both are one digit, so two dollars each.

12 is two digits, so four dollars for the one and the two.

144 is three digits, so six dollars for the one, the four, and the four.

BAM! problem solved.
